Students of our university are actively involved in the team contest in sports programming according to the rules of ACM-ICPC (International Collegiate Programming Contest of Association for Computing Machinery). During the competition students have 5 hours to solve the maximum amount of the offered set of problems, namely, to come up with an algorithm, to write, debug and send the designed source code for automated checking (programming language, typically, C / C + + and Java). Solving problems usually involves the use of mathematical techniques, known algorithms for their solutions and data structures, and sometimes the development of their own algorithms or modifying existing ones. Usually it is - an optimization problem and dynamic programming, graph problems, problems in number theory, mathematical logic.
Sponsor of the contest movement in ONPU is Luxoft company. Alexey Reshta, a former ONPU lecturer and director of Luxoft students’ programs is responsible for supporting the contest ACM in ONPU. Many alumni, former contestants, are currently working in this company as programmers. In particular, Cyril Yatsenko (participant of 3 finals in Ukraine), besides his usual work, conducts every week on Tuesdays from 16-30 to 18-00 at the office of Luxoft company classes with students on problem analysis and algorithms (both theoretically and almost up to the implementation in a programming language). Such classes also deal with discussion of tactics and training to compete in ACM programming contest.
Preparation for the contests are held in ONPU regularly in form of lectures (Thursdays, 15.30, room 409, coach - Eugene Berkovich), practical and laboratory classes (Fridays,15.30, main building, coach - Cyril Levenets).
Every year since 2003 ONPU has held contests in sports programming, which have the status of the 1st stage of All-Ukrainian Contest. The best teams proceed to the city contest stage. Also, teams that have shown good results, have the opportunity to gain new experience and knowledge by participating in winter and summer programming schools.
We wish the ACM contest in ONPU success, more good players and solved problems! Participating in ACM contest is the path to a successful career!
